Cherry Grove cottages and pride flags on Fire Island

A model community

Come as you are.

Fire Island is a place to live without being judged — whoever you are, however you love, whatever you call yourself. The rule is simple: you belong.

The ethic

A sandbar that learned how to accept people

Most towns teach you to shrink. Fire Island — especially Cherry Grove and the Pines — spent a century teaching the opposite. Live as you want. Love who you love. Wear what you wear. Do not audition.

That is not a brand campaign. It is civic architecture: no cars, short walks, houses that face each other, and a ferry that dumps the mainland’s scorekeeping in the bay. The island is a working model of acceptance because the people who needed it built it.

You do not have to be famous, young, or already sure of your name. You have to be decent on the walks. The rest is yours.
