Fire Island National Seashore

The island as infrastructure
Water plants, sewer, docks, walks, dunes, garbage boats. This is how a car-free town stays standing — in season and when the shares go home.
Walks, docks, water, sewer
Ocean Beach Public Works runs plants, docks, beaches, parks, and the boards you roll a wagon on. Superintendent: 631-583-7682. Other towns: the village office or the civic association — not a group chat.
Garbage and recycling
Each village posts its own days and storm exceptions. Ocean Beach publishes recycling notices on the village board. Do not leave bags for a boat that is not coming.
Dunes are infrastructure
They are the storm wall. Walk-overs only. Planting, cutting, and dune work are ordinance in Ocean Beach and policy everywhere else. After a nor’easter, stay off what is rebuilding.
Turn-on and winterize
Pipes, propane, outdoor lines — that is a licensed trade, often the same names in the directory. Villages do not bleed your house. Hire local. Do not improvise a torch.

911 first
Fire, medical, police. The 911 operator routes Fire Island. If you are calling from a cell that looks like the city, say you are on Fire Island and name the town.

Official emergency text from Suffolk County. Visitors: text SuffolkAlerts to 67283. This is the channel NPS tells you to use — not a screenshot of someone else’s phone.
Ocean, rips, red flags
Lifeguards in season in the larger towns. Red flag means out. After a storm the Atlantic is not a mood. NPS closes Watch Hill and Sailors Haven beaches when the swell is wrong — obey the sign.
Ticks, ivy, mosquitoes
Long pants inland. Spray after rain. West Nile has shown up in island samples. Standing water is a public-works problem you can fix on your own lot.
Propane and storms
Tanks walk in a flood. Secure them before the wind, not after. Ocean Beach has declared emergencies over loose canisters. If a tank is adrift, that is 911, not a photo.
Wildlife is not a pet
Do not feed deer. Leash the dog. Plovers nest in spring — closures are closures. NPS: stay on the boards in the forest.
